LUT University, UPM and ANDRITZ are expanding their collaboration. With the support of the two companies, LUT is hiring a research director to develop and increase collaboration between the forest industry and the university.
“We are aiming to boost dialogue between academia and industry and collaborate more intensively in a field of national importance to Finland,” says Mari Kallioinen-Mänttäri, dean at LUT University.
LUT has a lengthy history of collaboration with both companies. The open position of research director involves the development of research in areas important to the two companies, such as future forest industry concepts and related technologies.
Applications for the position can be submitted from 29 April to 26 May 2024. The aim is for the appointed candidate to start as soon as possible.
Building on years of collaboration
LUT is already collaborating closely with both ANDRITZ and UPM. What all three have in common is strong expertise in the Finnish forest industry. Their collaboration revolves around a shared idea of sustainable forestry.
“Our forest industry expertise plays a central role in the green sustainability transition. It is essential that we utilise the available forest and biomass resources as resource-efficiently as possible,” Kallioinen-Mänttäri points out.
Petri Hakanen, senior vice president at UPM, highlights the importance of skilled workforce in the field.
“UPM values the swift practical application of new concepts, processes, and expertise. Our new collaboration model will result in meaningful research, relevant education, and much-needed expertise,” Hakanen says.
“ANDRITZ has excellent laboratory facilities on LUT's campus in Lahti. The unique form of collaboration we are launching will enable us to study not only new defibration processes but also possibilities to utilise side streams and integrate new processes into our pulp mill,” says Johan Engström, chief technology officer at ANDRITZ.
