Power-to-X technologies are seen to be one solution for climate mitigation. However, there are multiple different end products and end uses for the products derived from these technologies. Methanol, methane, green steel and ammonia are a few examples of the products. To achieve the maximum climate mitigation potential of these technologies, it is essential to compare the emission savings of each technology. Here, the presentation focuses on comparing the emission savings of some of these technologies based on known literature and in Finnish context.

Hydrogen plays a vital role in achieving 2050 climate goals. Despite H2 combustion is carbon neutral, the production of hydrogen generates a significant amount of CO2 emission when derived from fossil fuels. When hydrogen is produced from natural gas, upstream emissions, such as those from LNG and pipeline transmission, must be considered.
The second part of the presentation focuses on comparing different hydrogen production methods (blue, turquoise, and green) with the conventional method (grey) in terms of their impact on climate change, while considering the entire value chain of upstream emissions.

The discussion on the environmental impacts of hydrogen value chains will be led by Post Doctoral Researcher Jani Sillman and Junior Researcher Husain Patel, LUT School of Energy Systems.

Jani Sillman received the M.S degree in environmental sciences in 2016 and D.S. in sustainability science in 2021 from Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT). Currently, he is working as a Post doctoral researcher in LUT School of Energy Systems. His research interest includes system thinking, sustainability sciences, Power-to-X and energy systems.

Husain Patel received the M.S degree in Sustainable Science and solutions in 2022 from Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT). Currently he works as a Junior researcher in LUT School of Energy Systems. His research interest includes LCA of a product system, Hydrogen production and utilization, sustainability sciences, Power-to-X and Energy Systems.
