Ethics committee for human sciences
Ethical review in human sciences
Ethical review assesses the ethical soundness of planned research. The primary aim of ethical review is to protect the well-being and rights of research participants.
In Finland, ethical review in non-medical research with human participants is based on the guidelines of the Finnish National Board on Research Integrity (TENK) The ethical principles of research with human participants and ethical review in the human sciences in Finland (TENK 2019, PDF). LUT University is committed to complying with the guidelines.
TENK’s guidelines are widely applied to research with human participants where ethical review is not regulated separately in the Medical Research Act (488/1999). These research designs include, for example, research with human participants in humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, technology, artistic research, and non-invasive health or medical research.
At LUT University, Ethics Committee for Human Sciences carries out ethical reviews and issues ethical review statements for non-medical research with human participants. The services of the committee are available to researchers at LUT University and LAB University of Applied Sciences.

Research integrity
The principles of research integrity and good research practices followed in Finland, and the definitions of research integrity violations and the procedures for handling alleged RI violations, are described in the guidelines of the Finnish National Board on Research Integrity (TENK). The RI Guidelines are followed in all research activities and across all disciplines. LUT University is committed to complying with the RI Guidelines.
Violations of good research practices
In the Finnish research integrity system, violations of good research practices are divided into two categories: research misconduct and disregard for good research practices. Research misconduct is categorized into fabrication, falsification and plagiarism in accordance with international practice. Violations of good research practices that do not constitute research misconduct are referred to as disregard for good research practices. Examples of disregard in different stages of research are described in the RI Guidelines.
The severity of violations of good research practices and their classification as an RI violation is assessed on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the practices and traditions of the research discipline in question.
Handling alleged RI violations at LUT University
Alleged violations of research integrity are investigated within the organization where the alleged violation has taken or is taking place. LUT University investigates allegations of violations of research integrity in accordance with the RI Guidelines 2023 (PDF).
A notification of alleged violation of research integrity at LUT University is submitted to the Rector through the LUT Document services (LUT.Asiakirjat@lut.fi) using the notification form (PDF) provided by TENK.
Allegations of misconduct related to undergraduate studies and theses are not handled by the procedures in the RI Guidelines. Instead, they are handled in accordance with the university's internal guidelines.
