The  core competence involves digital design and production of innovative products, research of sustainable fibre based materials as well as development of welded metal structures for demanding applications.

LUT's expertise forms an entity that conforms to the product lifespan concept, where the design, material choices, manufacturability, assemblability, serviceability and reuse of the product are all considered interactively.

The whole is the key concept in modern mechanical production. Digitality and all of its manifestations represent a significant concept throughout the lifespan-oriented processes of LUT Mechanical Engineering.

LUT Mechanical Engineering works in close co-operation with other competence areas and schools at LUT. The Competence Area of Mechanical Engineering has close ties with local society, creating an excellent environment for research collaboration with businesses and other universities and research organizations. The interaction with business life is a response to the research and training needs of the business world.

The Bachelor's and Master's of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering produced by The Competence Area of Mechanical Engineering are internationally accredited education programmes that have the EUR-ACE and ASIIN quality accreditations. These guarantee high quality, international recognition and continuous development.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering also organizes in-service training for companies, focusing on internationally accredited (IIW / EWF) welding technology qualification training. At LUT, we have been training internationally qualified welding coordinators (IWE / IWT) for almost 30 years. In total, more than 50 courses have been implemented and there have been more than 1,000 participants.

In addition, short-term expert training events and company-specific training events are held annually in the form of traditional seminars or distance and online learning.
