Pursuant to the national Universities Act, LUT University regularly evaluates its research through international peer reviews. A review panel of twelve international academic members has now assessed the university’s performance over the past five years.
According to the assessment report, LUT has made remarkable progress and mitigated risks successfully. As a result, LUT has placed high in global rankings, often outperforming much better established, larger and better financed universities.
“We recognize that it has been the result of strategic thinking, inclusive leadership, and dynamic and lean management. This has resulted in a research environment where researchers thrive and deliver,” the report says.
Maintaining positive morale and high quality standards
The assessment was carried out for all departments individually and for the university as a whole. The panel was impressed by how LUT had increased its research quality while improving and maintaining its collaborative and supportive research environment during the past five years.
The panel recognized LUT’s strong focus on impact but pointed out that the meaning of scientific and societal impact is not always clear. The definitions should be clarified and, when appropriate, impact should be measured quantitatively. Furthermore, technical innovations may take a long time to show results.
Going forward, the panel emphasizes that LUT needs to adhere to quality standards for research and teaching during its rapid growth. The report, which was presented to LUT’s board on 3 December 2024, also gives further recommendations to each department for the future.
