The excitement of getting accepted to LUT University was real, but with that excitement came the reality of moving to a new city, navigating student life, and managing finances. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by this transition, you’re not alone. In this blog, I’ll share a breakdown of my monthly expenses while living in Lahti so you can have a better idea of what to expect!
Accommodation Costs
I live in a shared apartment in the heart of the city of Lahti. The apartment includes four rooms, one of which I stay in. The only area that’s a shared space is the kitchen and hallway. Our rooms include our own bathroom. For rent, I pay about 385 euros, and that includes water and electricity, which means I don’t need to pay for those separately.
Commuting and Transportation
Since I live in the city, I take the bus to commute to the campus. I find that buying a monthly student bus card is much cheaper than purchasing single tickets every day. The monthly student bus card costs 45 euros, which gives me unlimited access to the city’s bus system.
Phone and Internet
Another fixed cost I have is my unlimited data plan, which is about 20 euros per month. This plan covers texting, calling, and internet access 24/7. Although my apartment offers Wi-Fi, I’ve never felt the need to set it up since my data plan already provides all the connectivity I need.
Student Fees
In addition to these monthly expenses, there are a couple of annual and semester-based fees that I need to pay. The student union fee costs 75 euros per year, which covers access to various services and discounts. The KELA health insurance fee is also something I need to pay every semester, and it’s about 35 euros.
Food and Groceries
When it comes to food, the costs vary from month to month. On campus, lunch is incredibly affordable at 2.95 euros, which includes a hot meal, salad, bread, and a drink (water, milk or juice). Depending on the month, I spend between 150 and 300 euros on groceries and food.
Essentials and Personal Care
Like most people, I also spend regularly on essentials such as skincare, hygiene products, and makeup. On average, I spend about 15 euros a month on these items.
Entertainment and Leisure
In addition to essentials, I set aside about 20 euros per month for leisure activities like going to cafes with friends, shopping, or attending events. I find it important to balance work and studies with some fun, even if it’s just a small budget for the occasional treat. Here’s a look at some common prices for leisure activities in Lahti:
- A normal cup of coffee with a student discount: around 2 euros
- A meal at a cafe or restaurant: typically, 10–15 euros.
- Movie ticket: around 15 euros with student discounts
