The Times Higher Education (THE) rankings are among the world's most prestigious university rankings. The THE Impact Rankings rate universities based on how well they promote the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

In the 2023 Impact Rankings, LUT reached the top 101–200. The comparison included a total of 1 591 universities. LUT maintained its position even though the number of universities in the ranking rose by nearly 200.

"Our ranking shows that we have maintained our position as a top university in the world and that our strategy yields results. LUT genuinely offers solutions to the greatest challenges humankind faces," says Jari Hämäläinen, LUT's vice rector for research.

Of the seven Finnish universities included in the Impact Rankings, LUT placed first. The University of Helsinki claimed second position (top 201–300).

The UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development contains 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that aim to promote the well-being of humans, the environment, and the economy. LUT was assessed with regard to seven SDGs.

Lately, LUT has ranked especially well in climate action (SDG 13). Last year, LUT even reached ninth place. In the 2023 THE Impact Rankings the number of universities rose and LUT ranked 26th.

“Although our ranking in SDG13 dropped slightly, I’m delighted to see that universities around the world are taking more and more concrete actions for the climate. LUT has been a trailblazer for quite some time,” Hämäläinen continues.

LUT rose to the top 100 in terms of two SDGs. The ranking indicates that LUT has promoted sustainable consumption and production for the goals (SDG 12) especially well, placing among the top 15 in the world whereas last year’s ranking was 61st. LUT’s ranking for decent work and economic growth (SDG 8) also improved significantly from last year.
