The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings are a list of the world's best universities, assessing and comparing them in terms of performance. The ranking list is published each autumn and is THE's best known and one of the world's most highly regarded university rankings.
The recently released 2023 THE World University Rankings include a significantly larger number of universities than before. LUT placed in the top 301–350 out of 1 799 universities. Last year, LUT was in the top 251–300 of 1 662 universities.
The areas assessed in the ranking are research, citations, teaching, international outlook, and industry income. The listing uses 13 indicators measuring the universities' performance. LUT's special strengths are research, citations, and industry income resulting from corporate collaboration.
This time around, the THE World University Rankings included ten Finnish universities, with LUT in shared third place.
“There are roughly 30 000 universities in the world, and an increasing number are making the ranking lists. It is great to see that the growing international science community and companies that provide us funding value our research,” says Jari Hämäläinen, LUT's vice rector for research.
According to Hämäläinen, the differences between universities are minimal, and even a few points in the score may affect the overall ranking position. This year, LUT's two-point decline in citations, which composed nearly a third of the university’s total score, had the greatest impact on the university’s position. Despite the slight dip in the ranking, LUT is Finland’s third in citations.
In recent years, LUT has also done well in subject-specific THE rankings. For example, LUT was eleventh on the 2022 list of the world’s best small universities. In the 2022 THE Impact Rankings, LUT was in the top 101–200, being Finland’s best and a global number nine in terms of climate action.
