As part of a national doctoral training pilot, LUT University will recruit 44 new doctoral students by the end of 2024. Half of them will be recruited this autumn. Currently, LUT is looking for junior researchers in the sustainability transformation. The application deadline is 31 August 2024.

"Doctoral education is not only a steppingstone to an academic career. It can also serve business enterprises. LUT educates doctors specifically for demanding research and development work in companies and the export industry," emphasises Jari Hämäläinen, vice rector for research and innovations.

Some of LUT’s new recruits will work in a Research Council of Finland-funded flagship called the Doctoral Education Pilot for Mathematics of Sensing, Imaging and Modelling. Other junior researchers recruited to LUT will be placed in the following fields of research:

  • Circular Materials Bioeconomy Network: From bio-based resources to advanced materials
  • Finnish Doctoral Program Network in Artificial Intelligence
  • Doctoral pilot in software engineering
  • Graduate school in particle and nuclear physics
  • Sustainability transformations

The recruitments are part of a doctoral training pilot funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture, in which Finnish universities will hire one thousand new junior researchers for three-year contracts to complete a doctoral degree. The new recruitments will likely raise LUT’s annual number of doctoral graduates to 100.

The objectives of the doctoral education pilot are to increase the number of full-time research positions and doctoral graduates and promote the societal impact of doctoral education. More doctoral-level expertise is needed in, for example, the development of health care, clean industry and the environment.
