The SEED kick-off day officially marked the beginning of the four-year journey for the doctoral candidates at LUT School of Engineering Sciences. During these years, the candidates will work on their individual doctoral projects and participate in two specifically designed secondments.

The first secondment will be hosted by an international co-supervisor at a partner university, while the second will involve collaboration with a Finnish company. Through the secondments, the doctoral candidates will have a unique opportunity to build both academic and non-academic professional networks.

Topical research from LUT School of Engineering Sciences

The highlight of the kick-off day were the candidates’ and their supervisors’ presentations about their research topics. The doctoral candidates' fields of study and research cover a wide range of focus areas within the LUT School of Engineering Sciences, including software engineering, chemical engineering, industrial engineering and management, computational engineering and technical physics.

After the presentations, the doctoral candidates and their supervisors had the chance to discuss and network.

“It was very inspiring to follow the conversations and to see that several researchers and supervisors already noticed that there might be common ground for joint research also,” said Mari Kallioinen-Mänttäri, dean of the LUT School of Engineering Sciences and scientific manager of the SEED programme.

The day ended with a campus tour. During the visit to the Jamie Hyneman Center (JHC), located on the Lappeenranta campus, the group had the unexpected pleasure of meeting Jamie Hyneman himself. This meeting was a great conclusion to an inspiring day.
