The Times Higher Education (THE) 2025 World University Rankings show that LUT University has established its position among the world’s top universities. LUT placed in the top 251–300 in the most recent THE rankings even though the number of universities rose by 185. Last year, LUT was in the top 300 among 1 907 universities.
“I’m glad to see our long-term work is bearing fruit, but as the ever-growing group of universities is levelling up in performance, we need to work even harder to maintain our position, let alone improve it,” says Jari Hämäläinen, LUT University's vice rector for research and innovation.
Significant improvement in industry and international outlook
The areas assessed in the THE rankings are teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook. Research quality was again LUT’s strongest area.
In addition, LUT improved its position in both industry and international outlook. In the latter, LUT landed in the world’s top 25 per cent for the first time, thanks to the increased share of its international students and staff. As a result, four out of five of LUT’s assessed areas reached the top quarter.
“Research quality is at the core of everything we do, but it’s also great to see that collaboration with our industrial and international partners has had an impact on our ranking,” continues Hämäläinen.

The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, published each autumn, are a list of the world's best universities, assessing and comparing them in terms of performance. The list is THE's most widely recognised one and among the world's most highly regarded university rankings. This time around, the THE World University Rankings included ten Finnish universities, with LUT once again in shared third place.
In recent years, LUT has also excelled in THE impact and subject rankings. In the 2024 THE Impact Rankings, LUT was in the global top 10 in terms of climate action. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025 by subject will be published later this autumn.
