The Times Higher Education (THE) 2024 World University Rankings brought yet again international recognition to LUT University. LUT placed in the top 251–300 out of 1 904 universities. Last year, LUT was in the top 301–350 out of 1 799 universities.
“I’m extremely happy that we could improve our ranking – even among the ever-growing group of universities leveling up in performance. We continue to strengthen our position in the international scientific community,” says Jari Hämäläinen, LUT University's vice rector for research and innovation.
The areas assessed in the THE rankings are teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook. This year, the areas included 17 indicators, four of which were used for the first time. Three of the new metrics look at citations, and one examines how often a university’s research is cited in patents.
LUT performed well in all the areas assessed in the rankings. In terms of research quality, LUT climbed to the global top 100. LUT's special strength is citations to its scientific publications.
“Our place in the world’s top 100 shows that LUT’s research is both internationally recognized and significant. On a larger scale, our research is beneficial to business and society, because we come up with notable innovations,” continues Hämäläinen.
The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, published each autumn, are a list of the world's best universities, assessing and comparing them in terms of performance. The ranking list is THE's most widely recognized one and among the world's most highly regarded university rankings. This time around, the THE World University Rankings included ten Finnish universities, with LUT once again in shared third place.
In recent years, LUT has also excelled in subject-specific THE rankings. In the 2023 THE Impact Rankings, LUT was in the top 101–200, being one of the world’s top universities in terms of climate action and sustainable consumption and production. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024 by subject will be published later this autumn.
