Biography

Heikki Handroos received his DSc (Technology) in 1991 from Tampere University of Technology, Tampere, Finland, where he also served as a senior assistant and Finnish Academy’s research assistant in the field of Hydraulics and Automation from 1988 to 1992. In 1992, he was granted a permanent position at LUT University as an Associate Professor in Machine Automation. Dr. Handroos was promoted in 1998 to Full Professor. He has been leading the Laboratory of Intelligent Machines since 1993.

His research interests range from the modeling, simulation, and control of mechatronic systems to robotics, hybrid transmission, and mobile machinery. He has published more than 300 scientific journal and conference papers in the field of mechatronics (currently 220 Scopus indexed papers). His publications have more than 2400 citations in Google Scholar. Professor Handroos has Supervised or co-supervised 34 Doctoral Dissertations and more than 150 MSc theses. He has served as principal investigator of academic and industrial R&D projects with funding exceeding 20 M€. Professor Handroos has co-founded four start-up companies: MeVEA Oy, Haptronics Oy, The Human Touch Robotics, and Flowgait Oy. For each of these companies, he on the Board as Chairman, He was a Visiting Professor (1-3 months)  at the University of Minnesota, the National Defense Academy (Japan), and Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. Professor Handroos has also been a member of the ASME, the IEEE, and the GFPS (Global Fluid Power Society). Between 2010 and 2018, he served as Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement and Control, and he has participated in Editorial/Technical committees for more than 20 conferences.

Professor Handroos has served as the Chairman of the Collegiate Body of LUT University since 2022, and he was the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Technology from 2007 to 2009.
