Heikki Kälviäinen

Heikki Kälviäinen has been a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering since 1999. He is the head of the Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Laboratory (CVPRL) at the Department of Computational Engineering of Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology LUT, Finland. He received his D.Sc. (Tech.) degree in Computer Science and Engineering in 1994 from the Department of Information Technology of LUT. Prof. Kälviäinen's research interests include computer vision, machine vision, pattern recognition, machine learning, and digital image processing and analysis.
Prof. Kälviäinen has supervised 28 doctoral and 173 master's theses, has written more than 230 peer-reviewed scientific articles (journal articles, conference papers, and book chapters), and 49 other research publications, and has been a responsible leader in 51 research projects (total 6,3 MEUR). Professor Kälviäinen's h-index is 38 with more than 6500 citations (Google Scholar). Prof. Kälviäinen has served 35 times as a Ph.D. thesis reviewer in 8 countries.
Besides LUT, Prof. Kälviäinen has worked more than six years in other universities: as a Professor of Computing at School of Information Technology of Monash University Malaysia and as a Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Information Technology of Brno University of Technology, Czech Republic, the Center for Machine Perception (CMP) of Czech Technical University, and the Centre for Vision, Speech, and Signal Processing (CVSSP) of University of Surrey, UK.
Professor Kälviäinen has served in many academic leader positions, including a Vice Dean, a Head of Department/Degree Program/Laboratory at LUT, a Director of East Finland Graduate School in Computer Science and Engineering (ECSE), and a Deputy Head of School at Monash University Malaysia.
